Guest Speaker: Glenn MacDonell
President and CEO of Special Olympics Ontario, guest speaker at Hall of Fame dinner.
Glengarry native Glenn MacDonell, President and CEO of Special Olympics Ontario (SOO) will be guest speaker at the 41st Annual Glengarry Sports Hall of Fame Induction Dinner on August 21 at the Char-Lan Recreation Center. Glenn was raised on a dairy farm near North Lancaster and is one of six siblings of the late Allan and Anna MacDonell. He is a graduate of Glengarry District High School and as a youth Glenn was very active in the local sports scene. He played on teams with the Alexandria’s Junior B Glens, Glengarry Touch Football and Alexandria Fastball Leagues. Glenn has been with SOO since 1988 when he began his career with the organization as a District Developer. In 1990 he was appointed Executive Director and became President & CEO of Special Olympics Ontario in 1997. With over twenty five years of experience in working with people with intellectual disabilities, Glenn is an active sport enthusiast and views Special Olympics as an important tool in advancing the aims of people with an intellectual disability. Fundamental to Special Olympics’ success is the fact |
that “we treat our athletes as athletes”, says MacDonell. In the words of Dr. Frank Hayden, the “Father” of Special Olympics: “It’s not sport unless there is some risk. We expect effort, training and performance. As an organization we have really made it when we treat our athletes as equals”.
Under Glenn’s guidance, the organization has over 12,000 registered volunteers and has tripled its fundraising ($9 M annually) and athlete recruitment, now serving over 26,000 athletes in Ontario.
This year’s Hall of Fame inductees include Tina Cairncross, Cathy MacLean, Kent MacDonell, the late Pilot Officer Campbell “Geeses” MacGillivray and the late Hugh Michael MacDonald.
