Her most memorable race was the National Capital Marathon, 42.2km. She didn’t place in the top 1,000, but she finished the race. She was on the mixed soccer team that won Provincials in 1980 and 1st in the cross-country skiing event at the Provincials in 1982. One of her favorite canoe races was the Gatineau 55km which she did four times. The fifth time she did the 10km, because she was 5 months pregnant.
In the late 80’s Lynn was the recipient of the Vern DeGeer trophy for Canada’s Outstanding Athlete with Glengarry ties. Lynn has embarked on many adventures such as being a torch bearer for the Montreal Olympics in 1976 and twice participating in the Rideau Lakes Cycle Tour (Ottawa to Kingston and back, 335km over 2 days). Some day she hopes to do the Raisin River Canoe Race with her husband and her children. |
In 1958 and again in 1960 Robert was given the opportunity to curl in Edinburgh, Scotland where in 1958 he received the honor of being made an initiated member of the Royal Caladonia Curling Club.
In the 1962 Ontario Curling Finals they won 6 games losing only one. In 1963 the team repeated as provincial reps in Hamilton but lost that final to Bob Mann from Hanover. In 1966, with Bill Lewis, the team won the Grand Aggregate at the City of Ottawa Bonspiel in a close-end play-off against Jake Edwards of Kingston. In 1967, again with Bill Lewis, they won the Ontario Silver Tankard which gave them the provincial double rink championship and an entry into the Lambton Masters and TV appearances on Arnie Butterworth’s Roaring Game show only to lose in the finals. In 1969 they repeated as Tankard winners. His family has always given him great support and understanding love in all his sporting competitions. |
In 1978 Murray was a founding member of the Glengarry Sports Hall of Fame located in Maxville. He was chairperson from 1995 to 1998.
Murray married Thelma James from the Vankleek Hill area and have been married for over 50 years. |
At the school, local and association levels she was extremely involved, teaching English and Physical Education, coaching several sports during her career, officiating, serving on the Executive and Sport Committees and acting as chair of the EOSSAA Transfer Appeal Committee for several years.
She was the recipient of several prestigious awards including the Pete Beach Award, the OFSAA Leadership in Sport Award, and an Ontario Long Service Award for Voluntarism. During the Glengarry District High School years Wanda was involved in School sports mostly as an official or organizer, not always as an athlete.She also taught at GDHS. She moved to Cornwall where she taught at St. Lawrence High School and General Vanier Secondary School. At all these schools she was heartily involved in coaching, always generous with her time and always helpful and kind. Wanda enjoyed spending quality family time with her son,daughter and grandchildren. A true supporter of school sports. |
He spent 4 years as a member of the Men’s Varsity Hockey program under coach Paul Arsenault, earning Quebec University Athletic-Association first team All-Star honours in both 1975 and 1976. In December, 1975 Morris was asked to compete with a Montreal team of Quebec Junior and American league players against the touring Moscow Selects, a group of elite players from the Soviet Union. In 1976 he was awarded the Vern DeGeer Trophy as Canada’s Top Athlete with a Glengarry Blood Tie. In 1976 while at Concordia he was named an All-Canadian. Morris was inducted into the Concordia University Sports Hall of Fame in 2003 as an individual and again in 2005 for the 1975-76 team.
As a player in the Manotick Kings Senior AA league he was awarded League MVP honours in 1982 and helped lead the Almonte team earn three Citizen Shields. But his most cherished sports memories remain his 16 seasons spent with the Greenfield Senior Men’s Soccer team in the GSL. He helped Greenfield earn 10 Championhips in 13 years between 1975 and 1987. Despite winning 4 GSL scoring titles, his play-making ability and commitment to the team were what he would become most respected for. Donnie has attempted to emulate the examples of his memories through coaching, convening and organizing tournaments and trips for the student-athletes at St. Mark Catholic School in Manotick where he teaches. |
