Dan Seguin

As a youngster growing up in Glen Norman, Dan Seguin has always had a love of sports, but that love hit full stride in high school.  Dan represented Glengarry District High School in several sports: basketball, football, wrestling, track and field and every intramural sport that was offered.  During these high school years he also played baseball in the Alexandria Fastball League.

What was remarkable about Dan wasn’t so much his participation in sports but his knowledge of sports.  He was an intense sports fanatic.  He was a devout Chicago Black Hawks fan, but his passion was the Montreal Expos. He had a streak of attending every Expo home opener from 1975 until the team left for Washington 30 years later.

Given Dan’s knowledge of sports and articulate communication skills, in 1978 he decided to enroll in Radio and Television Arts at Ryerson University.  After completing his second year, he contacted CJSS radio is Cornwall and CJOH (CTV) in Ottawa in hopes of making a contact and perhaps landing a summer job.  He lucked into a summer stint at CJOH and by summer end, Dan landed his dream job in broadcasting.

Dan began his career by anchoring CTV Ottawa Weekend sportscasts.  He also reported 3 days a week focusing mainly on local high school sports.  In the summer of 1981, Dan created a weekly feature called “High School Athlete of the Week”  which became very popular. Dan recalls that there was once a Glengarry connection when Glengarry DHS two-sport athlete, Kennedy MacDonald was featured.

During this time period , Dan covered the 1981 NHL draft in Montreal with Dale Hawerchuk and Doug Smith going 1st and 2nd overall.   He also provided spring training reports for both the Expos and the Blue Jays from West Palm Beach and Dunedin, Florida.  Dan had the pleasure of working with two outstanding  Ottawa sports personalities the late Bill Patterson and the late Brain Smith.

In 1995, Dan made the switch from CTV to CBC anchoring sports and sometimes news for weekday television broadcasts.  He also did radio sports cast for “All in a Day” hosted by Alan Neal.  Some of Dan’s CBC highlights were covering the awarding of the Ottawa Senators franchise from West Palm Beach, Florida in December of 1990 and their opening game on October 8th, 1992. He covered all of their playoff runs including the 2007 Stanley Cup Final against Anaheim.

Dan covered many exciting sporting events over the years, including six Grey Cups.  He covered the Blue Jays World Series wins in 1992 and ’93,  the opening game of the Ottawa Lynx in Charlotte, NC in 1993, and their championship run in 1995.  He covered Memorial Cup wins for the Ottawa 67s in 1984 and 1999 and the Gatineau Olympiques in 1997. Dan reported from the World Figure Skating Championships in Ottawa in 1984 and Calgary in 2007.  He covered the Beijing and Turin Olympics from the command centre in Toronto and travelled to Russia on assignment for the 2014 Sochi games.

Dan retired in March of 2022 ending a fulfilling sports broadcasting career of 41 years. He now enjoys  spending quality time with his wife Linda, and their four children, Justine, Thalia, Haley and Daniel.  He plays hockey and golf regularly.  Dan also dedicates much of his time as a baseball umpire holding a Level 3 Fastball Umpire certification and works over a 100 games per season.  Sports continue to be his passion.
