Carol Edwards

Since arriving in Williamstown in 1960, Carol Edwards has been no stranger to her community when it comes to supporting organizations and volunteering her time and many talents. A wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and teacher, Carol has been a driving force leading initiatives and projects that benefit South Glengarry residents and beyond.

In the early 60s, Carol and her late husband Mac, who passed away in 2020, joined other curling enthusiasts in Lancaster in their desire to have a curling club in the south of the county.  At the time, individuals from Lancaster village, Lancaster and Charlottenburgh Townships, were members at the Alexandria Curling Club. Carol (as part of a group of like-minded community members) was instrumental in engaging residents and businesses in the community, and funds were raised to build the 2-sheet ice shed and club where it is today at 13 High Street in Lancaster.  The Lancaster & District Curling Club received its charter in 1962 and has provided curling opportunities; built on strong community involvement for the past 63 years.

In the early years, Carol was very active in promoting the club and ensuring people knew it existed.  As is the case with many community-based curling clubs, the Lancaster club has always operated as a volunteer-based enterprise. When the position of president of the Ladies Division existed, Carol worked tirelessly to make the club the winter hub in the community. The Ladies Division, with Carol at the helm, led numerous fundraisers – baking and cooking to provide meals to support the club and invitational curling draws, bonspiels, and celebrations.  As its last founding member and still curling, Carol recognizes that the continued success of what the original founders dreamt of would not have been possible over the years without the many volunteers who share their vision and continue to grow the club.

Carol creates a friendly, competitive atmosphere on the ice and in the club. She loves to meet new curlers and help them learn the strategy and skills needed to win or just love the game.  Adapting to changes in the game and equipment, Carol continues to enjoy a competitive game with new and old rivals. A win is always extra special.

Outside the curling club, Carol’s contribution to this community can also be seen in another long-standing sports club. She initiated the Char-Lan Skating Club ensuring ice time was dedicated to skating at the new Char-Lan Recreation Center.  The Char-Lan Skating Club celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2024.

Carol’s quick wit and sense of humour, inquisitive mind, and leadership skills have kept her involved as a builder in her community. The success of the Lancaster & District Curling Club is one such Glengarry enterprise that has greatly benefited from her early vision and continued involvement.
