Stuart McKay
Athletic success for Stuart began as a student at Maxville High School. Later he collected team and tournament MVP awards while playing fastball in the Cambridge/Stormont league, and slo-pitch for the Moose Creek and Maxville teams in the Glengarry and Stormont leagues. Later, Stuart captained a slo-pitch team from SD&G, Prescott-Russell and Akwasasnee that won a bronze medal at the Ontario Senior Games in 2008 in London, ON. This team returned to competition at the Canada Senior Games in Brockville in 2010. Stuart continued to play on slo-pitch teams in the Ontario Senior Games across the province spanning the years 2010 to 2023. Noteworthy are his team’s silver medal win in Peterborough in 2022 and a bronze medal finish in Brantford in 2023.
Stuart served as President of the Glengarry (Maxville) Curling Club in 1984-85 and was a valuable member of a four person Building Committee that oversaw the fundraising and completion of a new building in 1989. As a member and director, he has conducted clinics, organized bonspiels and draws, and initiated the popular senior afternoon league. Stuart served as the club’s representative for the Ontario Curling Association. In 1985, he participated as a skip in the first Glengarry Curling Cup competition. In the 38 years of the competition’s existence, Stuart has participated 25 times and has been on a winning team a record 12 times as a skip of men's and mixed teams. Stuart enjoys membership at both the Glengarry (Maxville) and Alexandria Curling Clubs.
Stuart is no stranger to Ontario Curling Association competitions held outside of Glengarry’s boundaries. After qualifying at zone and regional playdowns, Stuart’s teams advanced in different competitive divisions throughout the province. Such examples are a fifth place in Ontario in the Colts division in 1997, a win in the Colts division in 2000, and participation in the Provincial Holiday Inn competition in Trenton in 1996, 1998 and 2000. In 2011, Stuart skipped a mixed team from Maxville to a gold medal, going undefeated, in the Ontario Senior Games in Haliburton. In 2012, representing Ontario, he skipped this team in the Canada Senior Games in Cape Breton.
He skipped teams from the Glengarry Club (2012) and Alexandria Club (2016), to zone and regional competitions in the provincial Masters’ division. In March 2023, Stuart lead a men's team from Alexandria and finished as runners-up in the ‘C’ Division at the Grandmasters Provincial Curling Championship in Thornhill, ON. In 2019, Stuart skipped a mixed team from Maxville to a fourth place in the Ontario Senior Games in Huntsville, ON. As recent as February 2024, Stuart skipped a Men's 65+ team to a silver medal in the Ontario Senior Games in Orillia, ON.
In January 2018, Stuart skipped one team of the two-team entry, from the Glengarry Curling Club that won the Quebec Challenge Cup in Mount Bruno, Quebec and in March 2025 Stuart also skipped one of the teams that won in Almonte, Ontario. This cup is the oldest trophy that is competed for on an annual basis in North America. Stuart competed in two previous Quebec Challenge competitions which occur on a rotating basis every six years. In March, 2019, Stuart was a member from the Alexandria Curling Club men's team who won the Gordon's Men's International Bonspiel in Sherbrooke, QC. This has been a competition for over 100 years under the Canadian Branch of the Royal Caledonia Curling Club between Canada and USA. A very unique curling experience occurred in Nov. 2014, when Stuart and his wife Joan, representing the Glengarry Curling Club, were selected, along with 11 other couples, by the Ottawa Valley Goodwill Tour to compete against teams on a tour of a number of curling clubs in Scotland.
Stuart married Joan Dewar from Maxville and they have two daughters, Lori and Sarah and three grandsons.
