Marjorie Stewart
Originally from Maxville, Marjorie is the daughter of the late Ernest A and Margaret McEwen. She married Duncan Stewart and soon after they moved to Alberta for employment in the oil industry. Marjorie was new to the sport when she took up curling at the Airdrie club in 1964. Wonderful teammates and lots and lots of practice soon saw Marjorie successfully compete beyond the club level.
In 1975, Marjorie and her team started entering Zone Playdowns and won a berth to the Alberta Southern Play Downs in the years of 1975 to 1978. During the eighties she began curling in the Calgary Ladies Super League, which consisted of the best female teams in Calgary. Again, her team qualified for a berth in the Ladies Southern Playdowns from 1980 to 1985. She was also skipping a team of her own in Airdrie and won the club championship in 1983-1984.
Marjorie took up the challenge to compete in large cash bonspiels in Kelowna, Kamloops, and Edmonton. She later qualified for the well-known prestigious Calgary Invitational Autumn Gold Classic, qualifying twice for the championship round and won 3rd place in 1990 and in 1991. During these events, she played against and was defeated in the final round by the well-known Sandra Schmerler rink.
In the 1990s Marjorie started curling in the Seniors division and played at the 3rd position. In 1993 her team skipped by Cordella Schwengler won the Provincial Title to compete in the Canadian Championship capturing the bronze medal. In 1994, her team qualified again and this time won the Senior Canadian Championship in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Later that same year, her team entered the Canadian Senior Games in Whitehorse, Yukon and won the gold in the curling event. 1998, saw her team win the Alberta Senior Provincial and advance to compete in the Senior Canadian Championship held in Sault Ste. Marie.
Marjorie started competing in Masters in the year 2000 as well as in the Seniors and played in the Masters Provincials six times. Her team were finalists in 2004 and 2005 in both Masters and Seniors play.
Marjorie continues to play twice a week at the Airdrie club continuing to enjoy the sport that has brought her great joy and much success for the past 60 years.
